FEA Engineer - Powertrain

Vestas Power Solutions (VPS) is responsible for developing, verifying and industrializing wind turbines and related service products.

It is here that we lay Vestas' technical- and technological foundation for staying the global leader in wind energy by continuously reducing the Cost of Energy.

The Powertrain department in VPS is accountable for the Powertrain System and currently consists of around 55 highly skilled employees, primarily situated in Denmark and in Germany and with local / remote teams in China and US.

The main function of the Powertrain System is to convert the mechanical energy from the wind turbine rotor into electrical energy.

The system consists of the main gearbox and generator as well as of main shaft bearings, lubrication system and the auxiliary components such as brakes, couplings and suspension / damper systems.

We have an immediate opening for an FEA Engineer for the Design Center, Porto specializing in the analysis of loads, stress and dynamics (EMA, FRF) of powertrain components as well as of component interfaces within wind turbine powertrains.

Activities will involve all facets of product validation in close collaboration with the R&D headquarters in DK / DE. Many of the activities also require involvement of external partners such as consultancy networks and / or suppliers, and this aspect requires a true team player with a combination of strong technical competences, excellent communication skills and a commercial mindset, and not least with a distinct ability to -

and motivation for - driving technical and challenging projects forward. You will become part of a cross-functional engineering team responsible for delivery of work packages and technical solutions to the entire Powertrain system area.

Responsibilities

You will work in various development projects within our 2MW, 4MW and 9MW platforms and make sure that based on your FE analysis the design teams are able to conclude, to evaluate technical risks and to take the right decision.

Main activities under this responsibility will include :

  • Define and specify the various scenarios for analyzing loads, stresses, contacts, elastic and plastic deformations and dynamics as well as bolted / frictional connections.
  • Prepare and clean up the geometry and derive and assemble the FE models on part, component and sub-system level.
  • Set up the analysis and post-process results.
  • Summarize the findings in a report and communicate them to the relevant stakeholders.
  • Generate linearized superelements as input to succeeding analyses.
  • Define tests and validate models with test data.
  • Develop and improve methods and tools for FEA.
  • Qualifications

  • Education and work experience (use internationally recognized terms for education)
  • Diploma or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Applied Mechanics.
  • Experience of 3 to 5 years, preferably in the Wind Energy, Aerospace, Automotive or Heavy Industries.
  • Profound knowledge in the Finite Element Method (linear and non-linear analysis) as well as tools (Ansys and / or Hyperworks preferred)
  • Experience with CAD- / PLM / PDM systems such as Pro E, Creo, PDM-Link and SAP.
  • Knowledge about anaylsing data in Excel and Matlab.
  • Good Programming and Scripting skills in Matlab and Ansys
  • Good understanding of Load spectra, damage accumulation and concepts of fatigue and endurance strength.
  • Experience in model correlation methods and software (e.g. FEMtools)
  • Understanding of physical component testing
  • Good English skills (spoken and written) required.
