Developer Manager (Lisbon)
We’re looking for a Developer Manager who can help provide line management support to a group of developers of varying levels of experience, from junior to lead roles.
The focus will be on personal development, motivating and supporting developers, data engineers and data scientists towards professional excellence.
This role will not involve hands-on development or architecture, but a technical background is an advantage.
Reporting to the Head of Development you will work with other Developer Managers to support and grow developers within the department.
SN Digital (SND) is a technology division of Springer Nature. We are responsible for maintaining and delivering millions of articles used by researchers, scientists and students around the globe.

About The Job
We are looking for a Developer Manager who is passionate about supporting and helping developers. You will manage around fifteen people, which includes : coaching, mentoring, identifying training needs, personal development plans, motivating and gathering feedback.
You will also advocate for software development best practices, communicate vision, goals and strategy to the direct reports.
Developer Managers are involved in shaping the department and its culture. That requires being involved in the recruitment process and leading by example in the community events.
Springer Nature has a portfolio of over 3,000 peer-reviewed journals and books across all areas of science. There are several teams to be supported in Lisbon.
Their focus is from the acquisition and processing of our content, to its online publication, access and analysis.
This role will be suited to someone who is pioneering and can reflect our department’s values in the new location.

What you will be doing
Within 3 months you will :
Drive the recruitment process for back-end developers in Lisbon (with support).
Help new people to be onboarded into the company.
Establish a relationship with the people who report to you through one-to-ones, coaching, etc.
Establish a relationship with HR and other key stakeholders.
Understand the goals of the Lisbon teams and how they fit into the wider picture.
Understand the goals of the Developer Manager team and how to contribute toward them.
Work with Tech Leads and Project Managers to ensure developers are fully supported.
By 3-6 months you will :
Understand the goals of the company and how the department helps to deliver them.
Foster an environment of trust where people can give and receive feedback.
Help to grow a sense of community for people in the Lisbon office.
Work with the Head of Developers, and other Developer Managers, to define the developer perspective on the departmental vision and live and breathe our developer talent strategy.
Coach developers and help them establish personal development plans.
Ensure departmental values and ways of working are well understood.
By 6-12 months you will :
Contribute to the reputation of Springer Nature within the Lisbon developer community by attending, organizing or speaking at external events.
Have a solid understanding of how to get administrative tasks done within Springer Nature (who to talk to, the process involved, etc).
Share your experiences and insights by writing internal blog posts and giving short presentations.
Understand how each developer is performing and provide support where needed.
