Operational Forecasting Engineer

Then you should join our team of highly skilled professionals in Porto which will work closely with a specialists team developing weather and forecasting solutions on Denmark's largest supercomputer!


We are part of the Power Solutions, Design Centre Porto, Data Engineering and Analytics working closely with Data, Simulation & Modelling department in Aarhus, Denmark.

This is where new turbines and power solutions are created, and we continually strive to lower the cost of energy for our customers.

The Data, Simulation & Modelling department in Aarhus, Denmark is responsible for the simulation and modelling of the weather and climate and how they affect the wind turbines in the real world.

We also serve as the central hub for all the sensor data that Vestas collects from over 30,000 turbines, bringing it together in our large data warehouse.

Furthermore, we are responsible for the high performance computing and big data systems that serve as the technical platforms for these services.


You will be responsible for operating the weather and power forecasting systems, developed in the group. As such, you need to be able to understand and challenge the mathematical modelling methods used, but also to understand how to help build robust software solutions that can be used in a production environment delivering data to customers all over the world.

You will assist to and maintain relations with both the group who develops the tools and with the customers.

Your tasks will include :

  • Responsible for the operation and delivery of weather and power forecasts to international customers.
  • Maintain and enhance the high quality forecasting service and improve forecast products and accuracy.
  • Provide exemplary customer service, sales support and technical training
  • Contributing to the future development of the weather and wind power forecasting system at Vestas
  • Contributing to the scientific activities of the group
  • Qualifications

  • Masters or equal work experience in meteorology, atmospheric science, mathematics, physics or environmental engineering.
  • At least 3 years of experience in utilizing numerical weather prediction models, preferably WRF, and post-processing and visualization tools
  • Experience as an operational weather or power forecaster
  • Experience with Python programming, including maintaining and debugging code.
  • Experience from the wind energy sector will be preferred and with a focus on computing and NWP modeling
  • Experience as an operational forecaster
  • Competencies

  • Ability to understand and debug computer programming languages such as C++, Fortran, bash
  • Experience with SQL and other relational database systems
  • Experience working in a UNIX / Linux command line environment
