    Content Acquisition - Submissions Experience Team

    We’re looking for a senior user experience designer to join our growing global UXD practice at Springer Nature and work within a large programme of work that looks at internal legacy systems and processes in the business.

    The job is based in Lisbon and you will work remotely at times with colleagues in London (UK), Pune (India), Dordrecht (The Netherlands) and Berlin (Germany).

    Springer Nature has a portfolio of over 3,000 peer-reviewed journals and books across all areas of science. The Content Acquisition (CA) programme you’ll be joining has been re-looking at the legacy systems and processes across our imprints and working on creating a world-class submissions experience for our global audience of academic researchers and editorial staff.

    Within the CA programme sits the Submissions stream. Submissions represent the process of getting a manuscript from its authors to our editorial staff.

    It is the connection between researchers and us as they begin their journey as an author.

    Working across the Springer Nature imprints, you will work closely with editorial and operational staff and the wider CA product, design and development team.

    Working closely with the rest of the team, you will help everyone to focus on the right problems to explore, then deliver solutions in innovative ways.

    Day-to-day, we aim to keep design and development as lean as possible - working towards delivering through incremental experimentation and learning.

    Within 3 months

  • Understand the broad view of the Content Acquisition domain, its goals, vision and current roadmap, users ecosystem and touchpoints with our services / products.
  • Relate this to the view of Springer Nature as a whole (publishing industry and the competitor landscape).

  • Familiarise yourself with the main user in this case the author (as well as other user types such as librarians and editorial roles who have touchpoints with the authors),through user research previously conducted and other sources of information both in the domain and in the business.
  • Work with the Product Manager to understand the scope and both long-term and short-term goals and priorities of the Submissions team.
  • Establish relationships with the Payments team to understand in more details the journeys for Open Access Authors who require payment funding to get their manuscript published.
  • Create an experience map that visually communicates your understanding of the current experience authors have of the publishing end-to-end process, with focus on the submissions steps.
  • Understand the data we have about our processes and users, start to see opportunities for providing a better services for our authors using this resource
  • Identify key stakeholders that are impacted by the work and what their goals are in relation to this journey
  • Collaboratively and cross-functionally design, test and develop evidence-driven solutions with your team
  • Establish working relationships with fellow UX designers, technical team members,business analysts, product owners and stakeholders across the programme
  • Work with the domain UX Lead to understand our ethos and preferred ways of working and give timely updates on progress and any issues.
  • Work with the Digital Brand Designer to be fully conversant with the existing library of patterns and components that you will use for your design solutions.
  • Familiarise yourself with the process to create new patterns when this is needed.

    Within 3-12 months

  • Understand the difference between submissions under Open Access and Subscription models and take those into account when designing the detailed experience.
  • Create one unified payments and rights experience map that answers all the different journal groups and their processes, whilst sitting amongst the larger CA user journey
  • Create a future experience map that delivers on pre-submission criteria, quality control criteria and processes for submissions, whilst also considering how that fits within the larger CA experience.
  • With the help of the Content Acquisition UX lead, get to grips with the problems that the wider domain is focussing on and focus the submissions design work accordingly
  • Help to facilitate and build a culture of constructive design critique within the UXD practice
  • Work with the UX Research Lead and Content Acquisition UX Lead to establish longer-term testing strategies and establish a regular cadence of testing and learning,pulling in the team or stakeholders where possible
  • Understand the underlying system architecture in how it will help deliver on the vision
  • If there are gaps in knowledge needed to deliver on vision, plan and execute the research activities needed to deliver on it, if that knowledge has not been previously gathered elsewhere.
  • Use the data we have to inform decisions, and build better products.
  • At any time within 12 months and beyond

  • Identify the minimum criteria and corresponding measurements that every author must adhere to be able to submit an article
  • Identify the main source of feedback and preferred method of feedback from both authors and editors
  • Identify the common quality issues and corresponding measurements that can be caught before it reaches an editor.
  • Determine the best measures and KPIs to track that correlate to the user experience and ensure regular monitoring and takes place to help define improvements and quantify value of design changes.
  • Continuously look to improve the users submission experience and help the team achieve their user and business goals by creating, testing and iterating on the screens within the journey and the journey itself.
  • Offer insights and ideas to the programme and work with UXD team members, product owners and business analysts to help shape the future of CA
  • Be involved in strategy planning sessions that help shape the product and its direction,by being the voice of, and expert on the user, through your design and research work.
  • Review objectives with UX Lead to plan appropriately for the next 12 month period.
  • Daily delivery

    You’ll be an essential part of daily product development, actively collaborating within cross-functional teams from your first day.

    We work in a Lean way and continuously look for improvements both to the product and to our ways of working and process. You will :

  • Collaborate with your product manager, other designers, business analysts, developers,and business colleagues to build solutions to user needs iteratively and quickly
  • Collaboratively design, test, and develop solutions with your team
  • Participate in daily stand-ups with your delivery team
  • Play an active role in the daily delivery of working software
  • Our UX ethos is to think and work visually; Create visual artefacts that help the team agree and get aligned on issues from high-level strategy to user journey details.

    User Research responsibilities

    Our UX Research Lead and CA UX Lead will support you in designing and establishing are search programme to validate design decisions instead of designing through assumption.

    You will :

  • Develop a research plan with the other UX designers on the team, business analysts and product owner to answer gaps in the current knowledge around our users expectations, needs, goals and pain points.
  • Work with our Research lead to create and keep updated a panel of users
  • Recruit, organise, plan, and run workshops, studies and research activities
  • Share findings within the project, programme, and design team and feed them back into the product strategy
  • Get the team involved in research activities at every opportunity to emphasize the importance of user research
  • In addition to user research activities, ensure other sources of user feedback and insights are monitored and utilised to derive meaningful insights.
  • These include : surveys carried out by other parts of the business, customer support databases, analytics,stakeholder knowledge, etc.

    Ensure there is a plan to keep explicit track of these rather than letting them happen in an ad-hoc way.

    What previous experience we expect from you :

    You will have :

  • Worked at senior level, and have demonstrable experience in carrying out all or most of the UX activities described above (user journeys, design / experience maps,personas / archetypes, parallelisation of conceptual vision work with daily delivery artefacts, user research and metrics and information architecture to name a few).
  • Taken the lead on the strategy and design of at least one product of service with complex workflows (preferably part of a larger program of work), ideally across multiple brands.
  • Successfully managed conflicting priorities and voices and helped delivery teams cut through the noise by demonstrating and evangelising customer-centric design thinking.
  • Successfully influenced product direction through your insights gathered from user research, or other user metrics.
  • Demonstrable experience in delivering digital products / services by working cross-functionally (product managers, business analysts, developers, front-end developers and quality assurance engineers) and adopting an incremental Lean UX approach.

  • Submissions : this is the process of getting a manuscript from its authors to our editorial staff. It is the connection between researchers and us as they begin their journey as an author.
  • Working across the Springer Nature imprints, you will work closely with editorial and operational staff and the wider CA product, design and development team.

  • Data : the data team is focused on working to identify opportunities to assist the submission and editorial review processes.
  • Our team works to identify opportunities and problems, looking to find patterns, build models, and test and improve algorithms that help our understanding of customer trends and ultimately, improve our products.
