Call open for applications for a research grant (Bachelor) within the framework of project 3DPARE - Artificial Reef 3D Printing for Atlantic Area , with the reference EAPA 174 / 2016 - 3DPARE Fellowship 2, financed by Interreg Espaço Atlântico - Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional, under the following conditions : :

Scientific Area : Marine Science and Ecology

Admission requirements :

  • BSc in Marine Biology, Sea Ciencies or similar fields;
  • Candidates must be enrolled in a degree-leading or non-degree course.
  • Mandatory Skills
  • Diving certification (Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver)
  • Post-graduation in Scientific Diving
  • Proven experience in Scientific diving
  • Ability to work at sea, both in the intertidal and subtidal
  • Previous experience in monitoring reefs and experience with marine fauna taxonomic identification
  • Experience using and programming specialist software / language for data analysis (such as R or Python)
  • Experience using image processing software
  • Excellent English skills both verbal and writing
  • Driver’s licence
  • Desirable skills :
  • Good understanding of coastal marine communities
  • Experience analysing underwater videos
  • Experience with underwater field work, sampling and surveying.
  • Track record in preparing and publishing scientific and technical reports and peer reviewed publications.
  • Hiring Requirements :

    In case the degree has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law No.

    66 / 2018, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of hiring.

    Work plan :

  • Monitoring natural reefs in the Portuguese coast
  • Test different materials and their bio-receptivity, both at sea and in the laboratory.
  • Monitor artificial reefs and natural reefs using several underwater surveying techniques.
  • Determine patterns of bio-colonization and species identification.
  • Analyse field work data and perform statistical analysis.
  • Write project reports and scientific publications.
  • Present project results in scientific meetings and in project meetings with stakeholders.
  • Contribute to other related projects and / or group tasks
  • Legislation and regulations : Law No. 40 / 2004 updated by Decree-Law No. 123 / 2019, of August 28 (Statute of Scientific Research Scholarship);
  • Regulation No. 950 / 2019 of December 16 (Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology); Decree-Law No.

    66 / 2018 of August 16 (Legal Regime for recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education awarded by Foreign Higher Education Institutions) and Regulation No.

    184 / 2021, of March 3 (Regulation of Research Scholarships of the University of Porto.

    Work place : The work will be developed at the Department of Biology and at CIIMAR, under the scientific guidance of Isabel Sousa Pinto

    Grant duration The scholarship will have a duration of 6 months, possibly extendable until the end of the project execution, not exceeding the limit of 4 years.

  • The grant stipend amounts to 835,98€ according to the table of values of the grants awarded directly by FCT, in the Country (
  • Voluntary Social Insurance : As long as the scholarship lasts 6 months or more, and in compliance with the provisions of article 10 of Law no.
  • 40 / 2004, the scholarship holder will be entitled to assume, by FCUP, the charges resulting from contributions that apply to the first of the steps referred to in article 36 of Decree-Law no.

    40 / 89, of 1 February, with the increase in charges arising from the option for a higher incidence base on its own.

  • In addition to this allowance, the fellow will be covered by personal accident insurance.
  • Selection procedure :

    Evaluation of Curriculum Vitae (CV) and previous experience of the candidates with respect to the admission requirements will be performed.

    Eventually, candidates will be invited for a decisive interview. The CV and work experience will count for 50% of the final grade, and the interview will count for another 50%.

    Advertisement / notification of final decision : the final results of the evaluation, will be disclosed, through a list, ordered by final classification, sent to candidates by email.

    Furthermore, it is further reported that, under the provisions of Articles 121 and sebsequent, following the Code of Administrative Procedure, you have a legal period of 10 working days from the day immediately to the date of notification, to pronounce on the decision, if you so understand.

    This decision may be subjected to a complaint within 15 working days, or, alternatively, an appeal may be submitted within 30 working days, addressed to the Director of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, pursuant to Article 191 and following of the Code of Administrative Procedure.

    The host entity may use the final sort list to replace the selected grantee in the event that the grantee quits the position, up to one year.

    Deadline for applications and form of presentation of the applications :

    The deadline for submitting applications will be 10 working days from the date of publication of the notice.
