Intellectual Property Counsel (M / F)

Kantar have an exciting role for an enthusiastic, organised and commercially-oriented Legal Counsel. The successful candidate will perform a key role providing transactional support to the Kantar business, including reviewing and drafting contracts using templates, playbooks and policies, liaising with and providing guidance to stakeholders in Kantar divisions and functions, and supporting the strategic initiatives of the in-house legal function.
This is an opportunity to contribute to the development of a fast growing in-house legal function aligned to creating value add for Kantar and which is focused on the growth and development of its team members.
The ideal candidate for this role will develop a thorough understanding of Kantar’s multifaceted business in market research and data insights.
Your new role :
Part of a small IP team that looks after the full range of Kantar’s IP. This role will focus on the development and protection of technology in particular.
The work will require the development of close relationships with innovation and development teams within the business to identify protectable IP at the early stages of projects.
Assess the benefits of patent and / or trade secrets protection within the commercial, competitive environment.
Advise the business on potential risks relating to third party rights through analysing freedom-to-operate searches and challenging the validity of third-party rights.
Engage with external counsel to advise on patent filing strategies, support patent drafting activities and prosecute patent applications globally.
Proactively manage costs to deliver strategically relevant patents for the business.
Structure, draft and negotiate agreements, including data licence agreements, collaboration agreements and technology R&D agreements.
Identify and advise on legal considerations around data and dataset usage (e.g. IP protection, licensing) working closely with internal Privacy Counsel.
Create training materials on patents and technology for the innovation and R&D teams and proactively horizon scan to identify potential issues in active areas of business research.
Communicate IP matters / concepts to non-IP personnel in a clear and concise manner
What you'll need to succeed :
4-6 years’ experience working at a top law firm or in-house legal department with a focus on intellectual property and extensive commercial exposure
Fluent in English
Member of the legal profession in the UK, US or Portugal
Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
Strong business acumen and ability to advise on business-related legal issues
Broad knowledge and experience of Patent and Technology matters in-house or at a firm with a strong reputation in this area
Previous studies, qualifications or demonstrable interest within the fields of electronics, IT, AI or similar areas would be an advantage
A team player who engages in purposeful collaborating with legal team members and clients (no job is too small or too large)
Able to work effectively across regions, cultures and time zones
The ability to organise work and competing priorities and manage expectations of stakeholders.
